On December 5th, Mr. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, a symbol of a struggle for human rights and against apartheid and the first president of democratic South Africa, died aged 95. Madiba, as he was generally known, was one of the outstanding figures of world history in the 20th century. In relation to his death, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic expresses its deepest condolences to the bereaved and to all the people of South Africa. President Mandela will forever remain the symbol of a democratic South Africa and the pursuit of national reconciliation.

Deeply touched by the sad news, Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Kohout remarked: “Nelson Mandela changed South Africa. In his life the challenging journey of this great country to democracy was reflected; and his determination will forever inspire those devoted to the ideals of freedom and democracy.”
