The MFA Spokesperson’s comment on the information of Právo daily about Olexander Timoshenko’s request for asylum in the Czech Republic

(This article expired 07.01.2013.)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not the authority competent for asylum procedure and does not decide whether asylum will be granted or not. Such decision is fully in competence of the Ministry of Interior.

Asylum granting process is standard, non politic and fully independent of the MFA. The Ministry cannot make any statement concerning its course and is not required by applicable law to do so. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs cares very much about having good relations with Ukraine which has been confirmed during the Prime Minister Mykola Azarov’s   successful visit to Prague last December.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs denies the information that granting asylum would have been discussed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Karel Schwarzenberg and the Minister of Interior Jan Kubice.
