Statement of the MFA on the Latest Development in the North of Iraq
12.08.2014 / 17:15
The MFA is appalled by the news about the recent development in the north of Iraq, particularly by the brutal acts of violence committed by the fighters of the so-called Islamic State against local ethnic and religious minorities.
These acts constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity. The MFA strongly condemns attacks on the Yazidis in the region of Sinjar, as well as members of the ancient Christian community in Mosul resulting in innocent victims, tens of thousands of helpless refugees and worsening humanitarian situation. The perpetrators of the above mentioned crimes will not go unpunished.
The ongoing fanatical and uncompromising actions of the so-called Islamic State and the accumulating atrocities committed by its members remind us once again of its intolerant, cruel and utmost dangerous character. The fact it operates in the immediate proximity of Europe is alarming and Europe must not underestimate these risks under any circumstances.
