Czech Republic in the UN
Czechoslovakia was an original member of the UN from 1945. As one of the two successor states of Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic was unanimously admitted as a full member of the UN at the resumed 47th session of the UN General Assembly on January 19, 1993.
Since 1993, the participation of the Czech Republic in the work of the UN has been very active, including in particular its seat of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the 1994 - 1995 term, its Presidency of the 57th session of the UN General Assembly in 2002-2003 and its activities in the Economic and Social Council.
Within its work in the field of human rights protection in the Commission on Human rights and its successor the Human Rights Council, the Czech Republic has participated in the drafting of the texts of a number of thematic and country-oriented resolutions concerning human rights protection. Worth mentioning are also Czech Republic's initiatives related to the UN reform.
Over the same period, the Czech Republic has also been elected to the executive bodies or become a member of more than 40 UN organs, programmes and funds as well as organizations associated to the UN. The Czech Republic is a member of practically all UN specialized agencies. In most of them, it followed up the tradition of Czechoslovakia's active work in the post-war period, in the case of the International Labour Organization even in the period before World War II (Czechoslovakia was one of the nine original members of the ILO, which came into existence as an autonomous institution in 1919, and a co-author of the original ILO Constitution). The Czech Republic also presided over UNESCO's General Conference in 1999 - 2001 (President Mrs Jaroslava Moserová), in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) it worked for the improvement of the control system of nuclear power programmes and for the upgrade of nuclear safety and security, and developed activities in the field of nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), arms control and disarmament (the Czech Republic participated in the preparation and beginning of the implementation of the EU Strategy against WMD Proliferation).
