Mrs Alice Herz-Sommerová, a renowned concert pianist and a survivor of the holocaust, is celebrating her 110th birthday on November 26. Ambassador Žantovský sent Mrs Herz-Sommerová a bouquet of flowers and his best wishes and congratulations on this wonderful occasion.
Alice grew up in Prague in an artistic family where Franz Kafka and Max Brod were regular guests. She started playing the piano when she was five. In the 1920´s she travelled throughout Europe as a concert pianist however the rise of Nazism meant the end of her career. In July 1943, she, her husband, and their six-year-old son Raphael were transported to Theresienstadt. She played more than 100 concerts in the camp. After the liberation in 1945, Alice and Raphael returned to Prague and in March 1949 emigrated to Israel where she worked as a music teacher in Jerusalem until moving to London in 1986.
Wishing you all the best. Happy Birthday!
