Canaletto’s masterpiece back in London after 260 years

(This article expired 03.05.2016.)

Canaletto’s painting depicting Lord Mayor’s Day on the Thames is back in London after 260 years thanks to the loan from the Lobkowicz Collection in Prague. The painting that inspired this year´s Diamond Jubilee flotilla is a centrepiece of a new exhibition at the National Maritime Museum „Royal River: Power, Pageantry and the Thames“.

The exhibition was opened by HRH the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh on April 25 in the presence of the Czech Ambassador Michael Žantovský and the Lobkowicz family.

It is the first time that the Lobkowicz family has allowed the painting to leave the country since its acquisition by Prince Ferdinand Philip in 1752.
