Applying for a Certificate of Czech citizenship

Citizenship certificate issued in last 12 months is a proof of Czech citizenship. Its possession is not mandatory as a valid passport or national identity card can be used as a proof of Czech citizenship. However, it is necessary to obtain and submit citizenship certificate when a person wishes to apply for a Czech passport abroad and does not possess other proof of citizenship issued in the Czech Republic (valid passport or valid national ID card).

Information for people born abroad

If you were born outside of the Czech Republic to a Czech parent or parents, you need to obtain a certificate of citizenship to ascertain your Czech citizenship. After your Czech citizenship is confirmed you will need to register your life events (e.g. birth, marriage), before you can apply for your passport.

If you and your parent or grandparent were born outside of the Czech Republic, but are descended from a Czech or Czechoslovakian national, we can provide advice about the section under which you will be able to submit your application and suggest a list documents that will be required.

Please note that the Embassy can advise on your claim, but is the advice is not legally binding and as such does not constitute a proof of your citizenship status or definite outcome of your application.
