Rededication Ceremony of Lidice Memorial in Coventry

On Holocaust Memorial Day, 27 January 2017, a short church service and ceremony were held in Coventry during the rededication of the Memorial that was built in the city centre in 1954 as a tribute to the people of the Czech village Lidice who were murdered during the Second World War. Coventry and Lidice established a partnership in 1947 when people of Coventry contributed to the rebuilding of the totally annihilated village of Lidice by the Nazis in 1942.

Among the attendees was the Lord Mayor of Coventry, Mr. Lindsley Harvard, members of the Council and the public as well as the Cultural Attaché of the Embassy of the Czech Republic, Mr. Ondřej Hovádek. After the service, Mr. Hovádek presented greetings sent by the Mayor of Lidice to the people of Coventry. Together with the Lord Mayor they symbolically unveiled the new Memorial and laid white roses in honour of the memory of the victims of the Lidice massacre.

As one of the centres of the British arms industry during WWII, Coventry was almost entirely destroyed after a devastating raid by the German Luftwaffe on the night of 14 November 1940. The partnership of both cities that shared a similar destiny during the war was mentioned many times during the service and the speech of the Lord Mayor and the cultural attaché.
