Václav Havel, Dissident and President, dies

It is with deep sorrow that the Embassy of the Czech Republic to the United Kingdom, announces the death of Václav Havel, writer and dramatist, one of the first initiators of the Charter 77 human rights movement, a leading figure in the Velvet Revolution of 1989, the last president of Czechoslovakia and the first president of the Czech Republic. President Havel died in the early morning of 18 December at the age of 75. More information on the perios of official mourning in the Czech Republic, including the days and opening hours for the signing of the Book of Condolence at the Embassy of the Czech Republic, will be announced shortly.
