Václav Klaus at the CATO Institute Event in California

(This article expired 05.10.2014.)

On Friday, September 27, 2013, Václav Klaus the former president of the Czech Republic during his recent visit to California gave a keynote address at the CATO Institute convention in Laguna Beach to topic „The Universal Quest for Liberty“. Václav Klaus´s presentation was a highlight at the three-days conference organized by CATO Institute, which is a public policy research organization — a think tank – dedicated to the principles of individual liberty, limited government, free markets and peace. Its scholars and analysts conduct independent, nonpartisan research on a wide range of policy issues.

Václav Klaus did ask two questions in his speech: whether there really is a universal quest for liberty and what kind of liberty is it talked about. Václav Klaus warned against narrowing the issue of liberty (or of the lack of it) in the modern world today. He has also touched the European Union issues and expressed his concerns about the current concept of Europe in the context with liberty, linked with the directive style of governance  form - „commanding heights“ of Brussels. He closed his presentation by saying that instead of seeing the universal quest for liberty, he sees many threats to liberty. He is afraid, that our liberty is attacked more from the inside than from the outside of our societies.

The full version of Vaclav Klaus´s presentation is to be found as an attachment to this article.
