HRC26: The Czech Republic calls on DPRK to halt human rights violations

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) must stop its large-scale violations of human rights, the Czech Republic said at the dialogue with Mr. Marzuki Darusman, UN Special Rapporteur for the situation of human rights in the DPRK. The international community should exploit the momentum created by the ground-breaking work of the Commission of Inquiry and its disturbing findings. Perpetrators of human rights violations and crimes against humanity must be brought to justice. The dialogue with the Special Rapporteur took place at the 26th session of the Human Rights Council on 18 June 2014.

Taking floor in the dialogue with the Special Rapporteur, the Czech Ambassador Kateřina Sequensová urged the DPRK to halt violations of human rights as evidenced in the Commission of Inquiry's findings. “We hope that the momentum created by the Commission of Inquiry revelations will not be lost and that its deeply disturbing findings will soon be followed up by further action,” said the Czech Ambassador. The Czech Republic supported Mr. Darusman's recommendation to mainstream the human rights perspective into all engagements with the DPRK and sought his advice on how to best follow up to the Commission of Inquiry's documentation of evidence on human rights violations in the country.

Full wording of the Czech Republic's statement is available.
