HRC: Czech Republic defends purity of UPR process, condemns reprisals

The Czech Republic has defended the fundamental features of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism.

“The UPR's main assets are universality, opennes and inclusiveness,” the Czech Republic emphasized on 21 March 2014 in the Human Rights Council's general debate under item 6. The Czech intervention condemned cases of persecution, harrasment and criminalization of people involved in the UPR. “We have been apalled by the harassment, arrest and the recent death in jail of Ms. Cao Shunli, a human rights defender who had peacefully strived to engage in the UPR mechanism,” said the Czech Republic. Civil society plays an important role in advancing human rights at the national level and beyond. “We call for the preservation of the openness of the UPR process and for putting an end to any form of reprisals,” urged the Czech Republic.
