HRC: The Czech Rep. in the Interactive Dialogues on Torture and the HR Defenders

On 10th March 2014, the Czech Republic participated in the Interactive Dialogues with the UN Special Rapporteurs on Torture, Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders.

In the Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Torture, Professor Juan Méndez, the Czech Republic focused on the role of regional mechanisms with regard to preventing States from using evidence obtained by torture. The issue of torture is a priority topic for the Czech Republic which supports the work of the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture, Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and financially contributes to the Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture.

The Czech Republic strongly condemned all forms of attacks against individuals defending human rights and fundamental freedoms. In the Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders, Ms Margaret Sekaggya, the Czech Republic stressed the importance of the Universal Periodic Review process for monitoring the work of human rights defenders and focused on the benefits of participatory approaches to defining and implementing national human rights policies.
