More effort needed to sustain transition in Myanmar/Burma, Czech Republic says

Although encouraged by reform efforts and past releases of political prisoners in Myanmar/Burma, the Czech Republic underlines that further efforts are needed to sustain the transition process in the country.

“We are disconcerted by the reports that not only there are still some political prisoners remaining in detention but that there are new prisoners of conscience,” Ambassador Kateřina Sequensová said in the interactive dialogue with the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar on 17 March 2014. The Czech Republic also expressed its concern about the dire situation in Rakhine State and encouraged the government of Myanmar/Burma to enact the necessary constitutional and electoral reforms so that the elections in 2015 are free, fair and inclusive. “We hope that the elections in 2015 will be an important milestone confirming the irreversibility of the country's transition towards democracy,” the Czech statement concluded.
