The Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic to the United Nations Office

The Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations at Geneva is one the diplomatic offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Its principal task is to contribute to attainment of objectives and targets of the Czech Republic's foreign policy in relation to intergovernmental organizations located at Geneva and international conferences and meetings taking place in the city.

The Permanent Mission represents the Czech Republic in the United Nations Office at Geneva, specialized U.N. bodies and agencies and other international organizations, such as WTO (World Trade Organization). This means about forty international organizations, institutions and instruments altogether (for the list, please see below), in relation to which the Mission's diplomats present the Czech Republic's positions, promote her interests and contribute to the search for solutions to the global or regional problems of today's world.

The Mission's diplomats perform their duties in close cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Industry and Trade and other bodies of state administration. Their international partners are Geneva based governmental officials of other countries and those of them who arrive from capitals to attend various meetings, as well as representatives of the secretariats of respective organizations and bodies.

The work undertaken by the Mission is distinctive by the wide range of issues which cover practically all spheres of social life and that can be described as follows:

·trade, economic and environmental issues related to the establishment and implementation of internationally agreed rules in trade in goods, services and intellectual property rights, as well as standards and norms in the area of telecommunications, metrology; issues pertaining to economic cooperation in the regional context and within plurilateral relations with the EFTA States; issues regarding protection of environment and promotion of mutually supportive relations between environmental objectives and other social objectives;

·human rights and humanitarian affairs, tied in with development and implementation of international standards in the area of human rights, protection of refugees and coordinated responses of international community to humanitarian crises in various countries and regions;

·disarmament issues and negotiations on related international treaty instruments, with a special emphasise on the Conference on disarmament and other relevant international forums, including those dealing with anti-personnel mines, small and other arms;

·social issues pertaining to international cooperation in the areas of public health, social development and labour standards;

·research and science, focusing on representation in the European Centre for Nuclear Research.

The Mission does not handle the bilateral diplomatic relations between the Czech Republic and Switzerland, which belong to the responsibility of the Czech Republic's Embassy in Bern. You are also invited to contact the Embassy in Bern in relation to the entry visa and consular acts, for which the Mission has no accreditation.
