First meeting of experts on lethal autonomous weapons systems

The ever first meeting of experts on lethal autonomous weapons systems was held under the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) from 13 to 16 May in Geneva.

The meeting attracted record attendance from States, United Nations organizations, the Internetional Committee of the Red Cross and non-governmental organizations. Discussions were focused on ethical,  legal, military and technical aspects and on examinations of the implications of autonomous weapons systems. The Czech Republic intervened in the general discussion and in both segments on military and technical issues. Czech experts mainly concentrated on the problematics of direct ban of the LAWS research and development linked to the civil research of robotics and on some advantages of military use. CCW States parties will decide on future work on the issue of autonomous weapons at their formal meeting in November. Full texts of the Czech interventions are available.
