On 10 and 11 November 2014, the Eighth Conference of the High Contracting Parties to Protocol V on Explosive Remnants of War to the Convention on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Certain Conventional Weapons which may be deemed to be excessively injurious or to have indiscriminate effects is held in Geneva. The Conference is chaired by Ambassador Kateřina Sequensová, Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the United Nations in Geneva, who will be at the helm of the Protocol V during the next year.

After the election of officers of the Conference, its proceedings began with general exchange of views in which importance of the implementation of Protocol V, a significant instrument of the international humanitarian law, was underlined. Speakers expressed clear commitment to provide concrete and sustainable assistance to victims, their families and communities. In this respect, close relationship of Protocol V to the Ottawa Convention and the Cluster Munition Convention was stressed.

After last year´s Seventh Conference of the High Contracting Parties to Protocol V on Explosive Remnants of War, chaired by Sweden, the Czech Republic paid close attention to the universalisation of Protocol V. With the latest countries to join the Protocol V, Greece and Iraq, the Protocol V has 85 High Contracting Parties.
