HRC27: Czech Republic welcomes new High Commissioner, stresses his independence

The Czech Republic encouraged the new High Commissioner for Human Rights to lead a frank and open dialogue with States and the Human Rights Council (HRC). The legitimacy of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) “stems from independence, impartiality and non-selectivity and the courage to employ fully these principles when defending human rights,” Czech Ambassador Kateřina Sequensová said in the first dialogue of the new High Commissioner, Mr. Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, 8 September 2014.

The Czech intervention in the dialogue opening the 27th session of the Council also called for the strengthening of the United Nation’s prevention toolbox. Preventing human rights violations and abuses is the best way to address crises, conflicts and violence. “Efforts aimed at promoting and reinforcing the rule of law, inclusive participation and democratic checks and balances should be at the core of this prevention toolbox,” said the Czech Republic. Concurring with the High Commissioner’s statement, the Czech Republic emphasized that Sustainable Development Goals should have a human rights framework and should aim beyond securing freedom from want. “Sustainable Development Goals sidelining rights pertaining issues such as access to justice or political and public participation would not stand the test of time.” Full statement is available.
