UPR19: Czech Republic makes 50 recommendations to 12 countries

The Czech Republic made a total of 50 recommendations to 12 countries under human rights scrutiny at the spring session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR19) in Geneva (28 April-9 May 2014). The Czech Republic also sent 10 countries under review advance questions seeking clarification on selected areas of concern. Both the questions and the recommendations made to Norway, Albania, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Portugal, Bhutan, DPRK, Brunei Darussalam, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Qatar and Nicaragua focused on priority areas of the Czech human rights policy and on the main challenges these countries face.

As a Troika member, the Czech Republic assisted Ethiopia throughout its UPR. In her capacity as Vice-President/Rapporteur of the Human Rights Council, Ambassador Kateřina Sequensová chaired the UPR sessions of Albania and Nicaragua.

At the UPR19, the DPRK was the country attracting the most attention (268 recommendations received), while the scrutiny of Ethiopia was also closely followed by States (112 countries took the floor in the interactive dialogue, the highest interest recorded at the UPR19).

More information on the UPR19 can be found at its official website.
