(This article expired 12.06.2013.)

The Czech Republic joined a request to convene a special session of the UN Human Rights Council in reaction to the massacre of civilians in Houla, Syria.

During the session on 1 June it voiced its condemnation of the brutal killing of at least 108 people, 49 of them children. The Czech Republic supported the resolution put forward by Qatar, Turkey and the USA that calls for immediate start of an international independent investigation of this incident to gather evidence for possible criminal prosecutions. The text also recalls a request of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to the Security Council to consider referring the case of Syria to the International Criminal Court. The resolution was adopted by 41 votes in favor, 3 opposing (RU, CN, CU) and with 2 abstentions.
