Human Rights Council: The Czech Republic makes a statement during a general debate on the annual report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

The Human Rights Council opened its twentieth regular session, hearing an address by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in which she updated the Council on her Office’s activities and then holding a general debate on the annual report of the High Commissioner (18 June 2012).

In addition to the standard alignment with the European Union intervention, the delegation of the Czech Republic participated in a general debate with its national statement. The delegation expressed its appreciation forattention High Commissioner and her Office (OHCHR) pay to human rights defenders and spoke highly of courage and determination of those persons, such as Ms Aung Saa Suu Kyi, to fight for the fundamental rights and freedoms. The Czech Republic also shared High Commissioner’s concerns about discrimination of individuals based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.
