International Organisation for Migration (IOM) is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration, dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all, which stands outside the United Nations system.
IOM was established as an international governmental organisation in 1951; the Czech Republic is a member of the organisation since 28th November 1995. IOM Council is the main governing body which meets once per year; Standing Committee for Programme and Finance meets twice per year.
IOM works in the four broad areas of migration management: a) Migration and development; b) Facilitating migration; c) Regulating migration; d) Forced migration. IOM activities that cut across these areas include the promotion of international migration law, policy debate and guidance, protection of migrants' rights, migration health and the gender dimension of migration.
