Czech Statement at the IAEA General Conference

Within the annual meeting of the General Conference Member States examine the Agency’s Annual Report and Financial Statements for the previous year, approve its Program and Budget and Technical Cooperation Fund Targets for the following period as well as appropriate scale of assessment of members' contributions. Furthermore, they consider applications for membership of the IAEA and elect new members of the Board of Governors. They also discuss conceptual and program issues and consider further specific proposals, which were put forward by the Board of Governors, Director General or directly by Member States.

This year, for example, the General Conference, on the recommendation of the Board of Governors, has approved the re-appointment of Y. Amano as the Director General for the next four years (1 December 2013 - 30 November 2017) as well as the re-appointment of the external auditor from India for the financial years 2014 – 2015. The General Conference has accepted the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and Brunei Darussalam as new members of the IAEA and elected Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Finland, Kenya, Peru, Qatar, Slovakia, Sudan, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, and Vietnam as members of the Board of Governors. Traditionally, the main technical topics of the meetings address improving nuclear, radiation, transport and waste safety and nuclear security, strengthening the efficiency of Agency’s safeguards and enhancing the effectiveness of technical assistance provided by the IAEA. Member States also deal with other issues like the implementation of safeguards in Iran, North Korea, Syria and in the Middle East.

During the General Debate, all countries have the opportunity to present the latest developments in whole spectrum of activities of IAEA and comment on current issues. The 58th General Conference of the IAEA is scheduled for 22 -26 September 2014.
