Georgian President Saakashvili at NATO HQ

(This article expired 21.04.2013.)

On 3 April 2012 NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen welcomed Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili to the Alliance’s headquarters in Brussels. The President attended a session of the NATO-Georgia Commission and addressed the Allied Ambassadors.

The Allies commended Georgia’s commitment to NATO and to domestic reforms. They encouraged Georgia to continue with the progress, especially as the country approaches the parliamentary elections this year, an important test for Georgia’s democracy. They praised Georgia’s contribution to the NATO-led ISAF mission in Afghanistan which is already the second-largest non-NATO contingent there and in June the force will almost double.

Earlier this year, NATO and Georgia agreed a set of measures to further support the reform process in Georgia and their Euro-Atlantic integration as well as a wide range of issues related to the Alliance’s special partnership with Georgia.
