New Well for Local Community in Kathmandu

A new well on the Machhindra Bahal square in Patan (Kathmandu, Nepal) was constructed in September 2012 by the Nepali organization CISD in cooperation with Czech water management experts in order to help the community to deal with insufficient supply of drinking water. The project was financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.

The project „Water for Machhindra Bahal community” was executed in Patan in the period between 18th August – 4th September 2012, under the leadership of the Center for Inclusive Social Development (CISD), represented by Binod Das Gurung, assisted by two Czech experts, Dr. Zuzana Boukalová (company VODNÍ ZDROJE a.s.) and Dr. Jan Těšitel (University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice). The project was financed by “Small Local Projects” development programme of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.

The project was based on the outputs of the in situ analysis done by the Czech experts in September 2011, and on the results of the discussions of the Machchhindra Bahal community with the representation of the Czech Republic (Deputy Ministries of the Ministry of Environment Mr. Ivo Hlaváč and Mr. Tomáš Tesař; Ambassador of CR to Nepal, Mr. Miloslav Stašek; Honorary Consul Vishnu Agarwal and the other representatives from private and institutional sectors) in November 2011.

Main output of the project is the new well on the Machhindra Bahal square of 9 m deep, which is helping the community to deal with insufficient supply of drinking water. The local community was also trained how to keep the water in well safe and drinkable. Newly established development cooperation between the Czech Republic and Nepal opens the possibility for other bilateral activities. In the next year, the company VODNÍ ZDROJE, a.s. plans to start the pilot application related to artificial recharge of groundwater in Patan. University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice is recently preparing a new project for 7-th Framework Programme of EU with NAST.

There is a link for an interview in Nepali newspaper Nepali Times about the project: http://www.nepalitimes.com/issue/2012/09/12/Interview/19614#.UFmXfI0gd2c .

The Machhindra Bahal project is following the project for the Buddha Nagar Toll Ward, Shankhamul, Kathmandu, executed in January 2012 by Methodological Center for Environment Management (METCENAS) and financed by the Ministry of Environment Czech Republic. This project helped to solve the water management for the community on the bank of the Bagmatí River via hydrogeological investigation, digging of the new well and installation of the water tanks.
