Visit of the Delegation on Economy, Agriculture and Transportation to the Senate of the Czech Republic

From May 26th to May 30th, 2014, the Delegation on Economy, Agriculture and Transportation to the Senate of the Czech Republic, lead by the Vice President of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, Alena Gajdůšková, visited Canada. The delegation was comprised of senators Jaromír Strnad, Karel Korytář, and Jan Veleba. While visiting Ottawa, the delegation was accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic for Non-European Countries and Economic Diplomacy, Martin Tlapa.

The delegation’s trip was the first parliamentary visit on a higher level after the lifting of travel visas for Czech visitors in November 2013. The main goal of the Czech side was to authentication of opportunities for the development of bilateral relations, particularly with respect to the upcoming conclusion of talks for the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between EU and Canada.

During the visit, the delegation attended a plethora of meetings - in Ottawa, the delegation was received, among others, by the Speaker of the Senate of Canada,Noël A. Kinsella. The delegation also met with its partner committees at the Senate of Canada. In Montreal, the delegation had a meeting with the ex-Premier of Quebec and the main CETA negotiator, Pierre M. Johnson. In Toronto, there were a series of meetings with at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the Ministry of Transportation. Furthermore, the delegation acquainted itself with the operation of the Centres of Excellence of Canada, discussed Czech Studies at the University of Toronto, and had a business breakfast with the Vice President of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, Josh Hjartarson.
