EU Week 2014

In May 2014 the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Cambodia participated for the first time in most of the cultural, sport and educational events organized by the Delegation of EU in Phnom Penh on the occasion of the Europe Day 2014.

"Europe on a bike: green is beautiful"

The Embassy of the Czech Republic was one of the passing EU Member States Embassies in Cambodia during a bicycle tour in Phnom Penh on Sunday, 4th May 2014. There were around 2,500 participants taking part in this successful sport event. More than 15 km long tour started from the Olympic Stadium at 07:00 am and ended at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) at around 10:00 am. In front of all representations of the EU Member States and the EU Delegation the cyclists could read the quiz questions on the European Union and the Member States with the hope of winning a prize (four bikes “Made in Cambodia”). 12th Edition of EU Film Festival in Cambodia

Kooky

Czech director Jan Svěrák’s film “Kooky” (2010) was screened during the 12 Edition of EU Film Festival 2014 in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap (5 May - 1 June 2014). As last year, the Czech Republic was among twelve EU Member States (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Sweden) participating in the EU Film Festival 2014. The Festival was organized by the Delegation of European Union in Phnom Penh in close collaboration with the Institut français du Cambodge (IFC) and take place in both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. University Visit

On Wednesday, May 7, 2014, Mrs. Jana Gašparíková, chargé d'affaires a.i of the Embassy of the Czech Republic participated in a university visit program to present the European Union, the Czech Republic and its development cooperation with Cambodia to the students at the Norton University.

Radio call-in-shows

In addition, on May 8, 2014, Mrs. Jana Gašparíková was invited by the local Womens' Radio FM 102 (Women’s Media Centre of Cambodia) for an interview under the theme “European Union in Development”.  Information about the Czech Republic, its development cooperation in Cambodia and the diplomatic relations with Cambodia were shared with the radio audiences.

The Europe Day celebration culminated on Thursday 8, 2014 by the Europe Day TV Concert with CTN comedy team, Preap Sovath, Sokun Terayok, Rolin and other Khmer stars. Five-hundred people attended the programme live in the studio and thousands  were watching the programme from home.

On the evening of May 9 the Europe Day Reception took place, where the Phare Ponleu Selpak circus performance was shown. Phare Ponleu Selpak is a non-governmental organisation based in Battambang, which supports community development through providing children, young adults and their families with social, educational, emotional and cultural support.  Its biggest sponsors are EU, France, UNICEF and USA. This year the Czech Republic is funding its two small scale local projects.
