(This article expired 30.03.2018.)

Cambodia continues to struggle with the impacts of the Pol Pot regime that had a devastating effect on the social and economic structure of the country. Cambodia belongs among the poorest countries in the South East Asia, ranking 138th in the Human Development Index 2012.

In the Development Cooperation Strategy 2010 – 2017, Cambodia has been included in the widest category of the priority countries, the project countries. The Czech Republic has had a long history of relations with Cambodia. Czech development assistance has mostly focused on the following sectors:

  • Health sector;
  • Social care and education;
  • Renewable energy on local level.

Geographically, Czech assistance to Cambodia focused most notably on the Takeo Province. Historically, the Czech Republic also supported the protection of cultural heritage in the Angkor area.

The Czech development cooperation in Cambodia consists of:

  • Bilateral projects under the Czech Development Agency;
  • Local small scale projects under the Diplomatic mission of the Czech Republic;
  • Projects from debt resettlement;
  • Trilateral projects;
  • Scholarships provided by the Czech Government;
  • Capacity building of universities through the Czech teachers' missions.
