Since its initial production in 2007, The Voice of Anne Frank has been featured at many European, African and American stages. For the titular role, Miřenka Čechová has received several prestigious awards including the Best of Fringe Amsterdam, the Outstanding Performance Award at Prague Fringe, and Top Overseas Production from the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. Critics and general audiences alike have been mesmerized by Čechova`s stunning portrayal of Anne Frank, underpinned by an innovative combination of dance, live music and narration. The performance is a mono-drama with live accompaniment by cellist Nancy Jo Snider standing in as the symbol of Kitty, the invented addressee of Anne`s letters. The crucial point, however, is the multilayered performance delivered by lead actor and dancer Miřenka Čechova, who plays not only Anne herself but also all the other figures of the diary. Critic Gayle Edmunds writes: “Anne Frank, an enduring historical figure who is, as a consequence, a regular feature of literature is given a fresh `voice` in The Voice of Anne Frank a novel perspective on a unique teen experience, grounded in an increasingly distant war, for a new generation.” LaToya Newman has this to add: “Communities the world over have heard of Anne Frank`s story, but we`ve never heard her voice. This beautifully written piece transforms Anne Frank into more than someone we know of through historical texts you get to know the young girl behind the story.”
