Live opening concert of the Prague Spring festival to be broadcasted in South Africa on 12 May 2014

On 12 May 2014 at 8:00 pm Unitel Classica TV channel (available to StarSat satellite TV subscribers in South Africa) will broadcast live opening concert of the Festival "Prague Spring” from the Smetana Hall in Prague.

The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mr. Jiří Bělohlávek will perform the symphonic cycle "Má vlast" (My Country) by Bedřich Smetana, a well-known Czech composer (1824-1884). The cycle is composed of six symphonic poems with "Vltava" being Smetana's most famous orchestral work.

The Prague Spring International Music Festival is a permanent showcase for outstanding performing artists, symphony orchestras and chamber music ensembles of the world. It takes place annually, from 12 May (the anniversary of the death of Bedřich Smetana) to 4 June.

The first festival was held in 1946 under the auspices of Czechoslovak President Edvard Beneš on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 1952, the festival has opened with Bedřich Smetana's cycle of symphonic poems "Má vlast" (My Country) and closed with Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9.
