International conference on manufacturing, growth and employment (Kempton Park, 20-21 May 2014)

The international conference "Manufacturing Led Growth For Employment & Equality" was held in Kempton Park on 20 and 21 May 2014. Among participants represented, Mr. Pavel Mertlík, former Deputy Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, former Minister of Finance (1999-2001) and currently advisor to the Prime Minister and Rector of the College of Banking, attended the conference. His presentation focused on the development of industrial policies in Central Europe after 1989 and the impact of foreign direct investments on growth.

Mr. Mertlík´s presentation „Industrial Policy in Central Europe: FDI-driven export-oriented growth“ was a part of the panel debating the role of industrial policies and experience from other regions. He introduced the Czech experience with the transition of its economy after 1989 and key steps taken during this process (former Association Agreements with the EU, financial instruments of the pre-accession assistance, energy and telecommunications unbundling etc.). The second part of his presentation presented CzechInvest as the leading institution to attract foreign investors. In this context, Mr. Mertlík reminded that the Czech Republic has become the most successful country in the region to attract FDIs. He also mentioned the European IPA Investment Promotion Agency that CzechInvest received in 2000 and 2001. Overall he introduced the Czech Republic as an example of the successful transition economy conquering new markets keeping its growth and stable rate of unemployment.
