Proposal for establishment of Western Balkan fund

(This article expired 28.01.2013.)

The idea to create a regional fund, similar to the International Visegrad Fund, came from the Czech presidency of the Visegrad Group. The fund shall support projects in the fields of culture, science, education, cross-border cooperation and exchange of experience.

This initiative was presented in Pristina on 26 January 2012 by the director of the International Visegrad Fund Petr Vágner and the director of the South and South East Europe Department of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ivana Hlavsová, during a meeting with the political director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lulzim Mjeku and the director of Department of Bilateral Relations and International Organizations Prindon Sadriu. The main purpose is to create a space for cooperation of Western Balkans countries in specific projects aimed at the promotion of civil society. Visegrad is offering its know-how and training of participating officials. The projects shall be carried out by non-governmental organizations and educational institutions.

Mr. Mjeku thanked for the Czech initiative as well as for the support from Visegrad and confirmed the interest of Kosovo to participate in the fund. Common projects would be a good opportunity for improvement of communication in the region.
