Commemorating Václav Havel in today’s World

Date: 06 November 2013, Venue: Brussels/Belgium

Václav Havel was one of the central personalities of the world events of the second half of the 20th century. He was one of the most known dissidents in Central Europe after which he became one of the most famous presidents of European origin.

As a philosopher, artist and a committed supporter of human rights and democratic values his work has been inspirational for a generation of activists, politicians, intellectuals and artists around the world.

The Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to the EU, Czech Centre in Brussels, European Partnership for Democracy and Václav Havel Library have the pleasure to invite you to an event entitled: „Commemorating Václav Havel in today's World" which will be held on Wednesday November 6, 2013 at the European Parliament, room ASP A5E-2.

The event will shed light on how Havel's thinking and his actions remain an influential source of inspiration for a generation of citizens. It is hoped that the event can become an annual occurrence, drawing inspiration from Havel to discuss the challenges to political, social and individual values in the ever-changing realities of domestic and international politics.

This event will commemorate the legacy of this great Czech personality while at the same time highlighting practical aspects for why his work is relevant today. These discussions will encourage participants to share experience in order to develop common learning from current circumstances in those states in the EU neighbourhood.

The event covers the figure of Václav Havel around three major dimensions: Havel as a dissident; Havel as President and Havel as a Citizen. Each section of the event will be structured as an encounter between various personalities who collaborated with Havel and people who, today, work on issues close to those that inspired Havel.

The Václav Havel Library, centre for the documentation and research of modern Czech history, with an emphasis on promoting the ideas and works of Václav Havel, has closely collaborated on preparation of the programme.
