Orphans of Burma’s Cyclone

On 3 May 2008, Burma was hit by Cyclone Nargis, which left over 150,000 people dead and almost two million without shelter. Tens of thousands lost both their parents and their homes overnight, among them one of the film’s protagonists, 10-year-old Ye Pyint, who herself now looks after her six-year-old sister and three-year-old brother. Though many countries offered Burma humanitarian assistance, the country’s military junta turned it down. The generals also barred aid workers from entering the country; for fear that the presence of foreigners could undermine their authority. This powerful film by two brave cameramen from the exile organisation Democratic Voice of Burma is one of the few records of the disaster and its consequences. Despite the threat of lengthy jail terms, the two reporters succeeded in mapping the fates of several orphans, as well as capturing the everyday lives of ordinary people in one of the most brutal and tightly controlled regimes in the world.

Třetího května 2008 se přehnal nad Barmou mohutný cyklon Nargis, který za sebou zanechal přes 150 000 obětí a téměř dva miliony lidí připravil o střechu nad hlavou. Desítky tisíc dětí ztratily ze dne na den domov i rodiče - mimo jiné jedna z hlavních postav filmu, desetiletý Ye Pyint, který se nyní sám stará o svou šestiletou sestru a tříletého bratra. I když Barmě nabídlo mnoho zemí humanitární pomoc, vládnoucí vojenská junta ji dlouho odmítala a zároveň zakázala vstup humanitárních pracovníků do země z obavy, že by přítomnost cizinců oslabila její moc. Velice silný snímek natočený dvěma odvážnými kameramany z exilové organizace Democratic Voice of Burma je jedním z mála svědectví o průběhu a následcích katastrofy. Dvojice barmských reportérů sledovala v průběhu jednoho roku osudy několika sirotků a přinesla tak unikátní svědectví o každodenním životě obyčejných lidí v jednom z nejbrutálnějších a nejpřísněji střežených režimů současnosti, který svým obyvatelům ani rok od přírodní katastrofy není ochoten pomoci. Jeden z reportérů byl zatčen a odsouzen za natočení filmu ke třinácti letům vězení.
