Karel Demel, one of the most famous and honored contemporary Czech graphic artists, will show the wide-range of his contemporary works. His graphics, which are on show, express in the best way the original and unrepeatable author’s artistic view. The characteristic features of Demel’s work are above all the symbolism, allegory, passion, inspiration by woman beauty, music and poetry. This bedrock is developed further into an imaginative and dreamful complex of art work, where enough space for percipient’s own imagination and ideas exists. Thus the author clearly prefers the imagination and abstraction over the reality.
Karel Demel wasborn in Prague in 1942. His first choice of study was music and he graduated at the Prague State Conservatory in 1963 as a trombonist. After two years as an army musician he returned to studies, this time as a student at the College of Fine Arts, studying graphics under Jiří Anderle. Since the mid‑1970s he is one of the best known Czech graphic artists. From the beginning, he brought together free composition and applied techniques in his work. Although attractive, there are disturbing scenes of monsters, dramatic events, and transpositions of musical and literary works and portraits of their authors. There seems to be the fundamental quarrel of chaos and cosmos, bedlam and order. Although this exhibition is his very first in the Republic of Korea, Karel Demel hold already many solo exhibitions in his homeland as well as abroad. He presented his works in Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Great Britain, France, Slovakia, Lithuania, Zimbabwe, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Mongolia, Algeria, Egypt, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Argentina and Mongolia to mention at least a few.
