High Level Humanitarian Donor Conference on South Sudan in Oslo

The capital of Norway hosted the High Level Humanitarian Conference on South Sudan from May 19 to May 20, 2014. The conference was co-chaired by Børge Brende, Norwegian Minister fo Foreign Affairs Børge Brende and Valerie Amos, Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator. Representatives of more than 40 countries participated in the conference such as Barnaba Marial Benjamin, Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Sudan, Ali Ahmed Karti, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sudan, Kristalina Georgieva, EU Commissioner for International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid and many others as well as representatives of Humanitarian organizations and United Nations. The Czech Republic was represented by Mrs. Zuzana Hlavickova, Director of Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid department of the Czech MFA, Mr. Milan Dufek, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Norway and Mr. Jan Buben, Deputy Head of Mission.

The purpose of the conference was to discuss how to address humanitarian crisis in South Sudan and to mobilize funding for the delivery of humanitarian assistance to South Sudan, where it is estimated that 4,9 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, more than 1,2 million people have fled from their homes (of which 320 thousand left South Sudan to seek refuge in Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan and Kenya) and roughly 1 million of people could face famine if urgent action is not taken. The continuing of hostilities and armed conflict rapidly deteriorates already grave situation in South Sudan, which may spread into neighboring countries.

In Oslo, donors pledged more than 600 million USD in new funding for both South Sudan and the region, which increased the total aid for South Sudan made so far this year to 1,2 billion USD. The Czech Republic has also committed 150.000 USD for assistance to South Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia, which increased Czech Republic´s contribution to South Sudan humanitarian crises to 450.000 USD.
