Why Central Europe Matters

Almost 25 years have passed since Central Europe rejected communism. Entire economies, politics, laws and mindsets had to be transformed before the region entered the European Union in 2004. How have the Central Europeans managed their democratic and neo-liberal transitions? What do the changes mean to Australia and the world?

Speakers: Offering an academic perspective are Dr Gosia Klatt, Melbourne University, Dr Patrick Kimunguyi, Monash University, Dr Stefan Auer, La Trobe University and Prof Leslie Holmes, Melbourne University. Mr Paul Myler, Europe Division - Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade, (DFAT), Mr Charles Kovess, Australia-Hungary Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Mr Steve Rank, Australian Trade Commission (AusTrade) will speak on business opportunities. We are fortunate in having H.E. Dr Hynek Kmonícek, Ambassador of the Czech Republic, H.E. Anna Sikó, Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary, H.E. Mr Andrzej Jaroszynski, Ambassador of the Republic of Poland and H.E. Dr Eva Ponomarenková, Ambassador of the Slovak Republic join us for the roundtable.
