Short stay Visa - Work and Research

Here you can find all the information about employment or work short stay visas up to 90 days of stay

Please read the following information carefully before lodging your application.

APPLICATIONS HAVE TO BE LODGED IN PERSON AT THE CONSULATE OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC IN SYDNEY.

Schengen visa applications can be submitted six months at the earliest and 15 days at the latest ahead of the trip (counted from the appointment date). 

Each applicant must lodge their own application. Applications for children (under 15 years of age) will be completed and signed by their parents. Dependants (spouse/children) accompanying the primary applicant are required to lodge their application at the same time as the primary applicant.

All supporting documents must be submitted in original or certified photocopy.

Applicants for a Schengen visa up to 90 days of stay - type C will need to submit following documents:

1. Application form

Completed and signed visa application form together with a passport sized photograph. Application form can be downloaded here .


2. Travel document

Travel document (passport) valid for at least ninety days after the intended end of stay in the Schengen area.


3. Work permit

Work permit issued by the Labour Office (Úřad práce) of the Czech Republic in case of employment. This permit has to be applied for by your employer in the Czech Republic

A work permit may not be required in certain exceptional circumstances, eg. for accredited journalists, members of rescue teams, international public transport employees, interns, employees of other EU member states. Evidence of the above will be required. If unsure, please contact the Consulate.

According to Section 98 of Act 435/2004 Coll.on Employment, a work permit shall not be required to employ a foreign national

a)  who has a permanent residency permit,
b) who is a relative of a member of a diplomatic mission, consular authority or a relative of an employee of an international Government organization with its registered seat in the Czech Republic, provided that reciprocity is assured under an international treaty ratified by the Parliament and binding upon the Czech Republic,
c) who has been granted refugee status, 51)
d) whose execution of office on the territory of the Czech Republic does not exceed 7 consecutive calendar days or a total of 30 days in a calendar year and who is at the same time a performing artist, an educator, a member of a university academic staff, a scientist or a member of a research and development staff taking part in a scientific conference or meeting, a pupil or student under the age of 26, an athlete, a person procuring the supply of goods or services in the Czech Republic or a person supplying such services or goods, or a person carrying out assembly works under a commercial agreement, or carrying out warranty and repair work.

Research workers, holders of a stay permit for research purposes in another EU member state, will need to submit their research agreement with a research institution seated in the other EU member state.


4. Accommodation

Evidence that accommodation will be provided to the applicant for the duration of their stay in the Schengen area.


5. Evidence of purpose of stay

Evidence of the proposed purpose of stay in the Schengen area.

Evidence of sufficient funds, accommodation and/or purpose of stay also include:

  • official invitation form (issued by the Foreigners Police of the Czech Republic) completed by a person permanently living in the Czech Republic or by a company registered in the Czech Republic;
  • voucher from medical, recreational or spa establishment;
  • voucher from a travel agent.

6. Evidence of adequate funds connected with returning from the Schengen area

Return international air ticket, railway or bus ticket; or financial means to cover the transport costs from the Schnegen area.


7. Visas to all countries on route from the Schengen area

This is required if the foreigner does not travel from the Schengen area directly to their country of residence or for which they hold a valid long-term visa.


8. Certificate of health insurance

Health insurance policy that covers medical expenses related to injury or illness in the Czech Republic including expenses connected with transportation of the foreigner to the country of which they are a passport holder or to a country in which they have permanent residence. Minimum insurance cover must be of 30,000.- EUR. The policy must be valid for the duration of their stay in the Schengen Area/Czech Republic (more information).


9. Visa fee

Additional information:

Schengen visa applications will be processed within 15 days after a complete application is accepted. 

Please include details how your passport should be returned (if applicable): 

  • AUSTRALIA - If by mail, a self addressed prepaid Express Post Platinum  envelope (or other prepaid envelope of your choice) has to be enclosed.
  • NEW ZEALAND - you may arrange any courier company to pick up your passport once the visa is issued or we will send information regarding paying for postage (International Express Post to New Zealand is 29 AUD).
