“11 Worlds” exhibited in Haapsalu

(This article expired 16.01.2015.)

On the 23rd of October the exhibition of contemporary Czech children’s illustrations named “11 Worlds” was inaugurated at the Ilon's Wonderland gallery in Haapsalu.

This exhibition presents eleven young and middle aged Czech artists who have very different approaches from traditional illustration techniques to comics. The intention was to make an interesting exhibition for adults and children at the same time. Each author is therefore introduced by two panels: in the first one with information about herself or himself and in the second one with presentation of her or his work. The exhibition was opened jointly by the director of the museum Liina Valdmann, and the Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Estonia Richard Kadlčák.

At the opening ceremony Krista Kumberg, who is a specialist of the children´s library spoke about Czech children's books and illustrations in Estonia since the second half of the previous century. The opening ceremony was attended also by the Deputy Mayor for Culture and Education Liina Põld, and the cultural advisor at the Läänemaa County Government Kristi Erkmann. For the younger visitors organisers prepared a quiz competition – three of lucky contestants received a prize.

Ilon's Wonderland gallery in Haapsalu was named after the famous illustrator Ilon Wikland, who was born in Estonia and lived here until she was 14 years old. Then she moved to Sweden and her name is mainly associated with the famous Swedish author of children’s literature, Astrid Lindgren, among the most famous being Pippi Longstocking.
