Visit of the Defence Committee of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

On June 2-5, 2014 the delegation of the Defence Committee of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of Czech Republic visited Estonia. The members of the delegation met with their counterparts in the National Defence Committee and the members of the Estonian-Czech friendship group of Riigikogu. They discussed also with representatives of the Ministry of Defence, the Defence Forces, the Air Force, the Navy, AS Alara and the Environmental Investment Centre. The delegation took part in the official flag hosting ceremony dedicated to the recent membership of Czech Republic at the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence in Tallinn.

The delegation, led by the chairman of the Committee D. Kádner, and members J. Černochová, M. Sedlář and J. Skalický, accompanied by the secretary of the committee K. Svobodová was hosted by the National Defence Committee of Riigikogu. The ambassador of Czech Republic to Estonia R. Kadlčák participated in all the meetings as well.

Good relations and cooperation in the area of defence between the countries were emphasised during the meeting with the National Defence Committee. The chairman M. Raidma appreciated that the bilateral meetings between the parliaments are getting more frequent. A possibility of the Czech participation in NATO air policing mission in Baltic region was discussed profoundly and further cooperation between the Brno Defence University and Baltic Defence College was considered as a common interest.

The members of the Czech Parliament highly appreciated open discussions with the commander of the Estonian defence Forces Major General R. Terras and permanent secretary of the Ministry of Defence M. Marran. They visited the Ämari Airbase, Navy Base in Tallinn and former soviet nuclear submarine sailors’ training center in Paldiski still containing a nuclear waste (managed by AS Alara). They discussed environmental aspects related to the Soviet military objects with the chairman of the management board of the Environmental Investment Centre V. Kaufmann.

The delegation met with the members of the Estonian-Czech friendship group, chaired by T. Koiv and discussed an internal political situation in both countries among other topics.

The delegation attended the official flag ceremony at the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence in the occasion of Czech Republic joining the Centre together with France, United Kingdom and Austria.

The National Defence Committee of the Estonian Parliament visited Czech Republic at the end of April 2014 and had meetings at the Ministry of Defence and the Parliament.

Czech fighter jets have policed the Baltic and Estonian air twice, in 2009 and 2012.
