Travelling to the breakaway regions

(This article expired 18.01.2015.)

Due to the security situation, the MFA advises against travelling to the breakaway regions and their immediate vicinity.

The Georgian “Law on Occupied Teorritories” – which includes Abkhazia and South Ossetia and was introduced after the 2008 war – is very restrictive. Entering Abkhazia and South Ossetia from Russia is illegal according to Georgian legislation. The situation along the so-called administrative boundary lines, i.e. Georgian territory adjacent to the breakaway regions, is still tense from time to time and Russia has consolidated its military presence in these two regions of Georgia. The EU Monitoring Mission to Georgia, EUMM, patrols the areas in question but is denied entry to Abkhazia and South Ossetia by the de-facto authorities of these regions. Anyone who chooses to go to Abkhazia or South Ossetia should keep in mind that the Georgian authorities has no control over these region, which also means that the Embassy has very limited possibilities to act in consular matters.
