Bilateral relations were evidently dependent on the development of mutual Japanese-Soviet relations. Diplomatic relations were re-established 13th February 1957 and were simultaneously upgraded to the level of embassies. This event succeeded termination of persisting belligerency between Japan and Soviet Union in 1956. Ladislav Simovic was nominated as the first Czechoslovak ambassador in Japan and Shiroshichi Kimura as the first Japanese ambassador in Czechoslovakia.

Bilateral relations in the period from 1957 to 1989 could be generally evaluated as rather less developed but without any significant frictions. The cooperation focused mainly on the sphere of commerce, science, research and culture.

Official visit of Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Takeo Miki in 1967 was considered to be a turning point in the political field. It was the first visit of a member of the Japanese government in communist Czechoslovakia.

The intervention of Warsaw pact troops was castigated by Japanese government which subsequently restricted bilateral relations for a period of several years. In spite of that business relations did not stop to advance. The Czechoslovak Minister of foreign trade Vaclav Vales even officially visited Japan in the end of 1968. It was a first official visit of a member of the government of communist Czechoslovakia. The first visit on the highest level took place in 1970 when Czechoslovak president Ludvik Svoboda accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Marko and a numerous delegation attended World Exposition in Osaka. Several mutual visits on various levels suceeded in two following decades.

The text is, among others, based on the Jan Levora's article which was published in Information Bulletin "Ten years of Czech-Japanese Relations" of Embassy of Japan in the Czech republic.
