Czech history on the movie screen – this time it was about air balloons and airships at the turn of the 19th century to 20th century

Another movie night and mini-festival was dedicated to flying in balloons and airships, which have been developed in Europe, as well as, Czech Republic mainly since the late 19th century. This time, in audience there were also members of the Mongolian Paragliding Association, who in the final discussion showed great interest in cooperation not only with Czech companies producing hang gliders and paragliding supplements, but also with Czech instructors of this sport.

Parts of the film by Karel Zeman "Stolen Airship", which is inspired by Jules Verne's novel “Two Years’ Vacation”, and the first part of a documentary trilogy “Czech aeronautics” by director Olina Kaufmanová led us to the earliest days of flying from the late 18th century until the famous year of Jubilee Exhibition on the new Prague Exhibition Field in 1891. In addition, audience got familiar with the technical development of controlled flying in air-balloons and airships until World War II. Especially for some Czechs working in Mongolia as well as students graduated from Czech universities, they have enjoyed the second part of latter trilogy and yet rebounded into the 60s and 70s of the 20th century where it have been seen the admirable fate of the Mr. Ivo Vodseďálek and his friends of the Czech Balloon Club, who faced many hardships, policy barriers and Svazarm’s complications yet they became more encouraged to do more. The evening continued – as if we were drifted away by the wind along with balloons into the world of boys’ dreams...
