Since 1990, relations between the EU and Mongolia have developed positively. The EU has been – and continues to be - involved in national and regional cooperation activities with Mongolia and regards the country as an important partner to further develop close ties with. EU relations with Mongolia were established in 1989 and are governed by the 1993 EU-Mongolia Trade and Cooperation Agreement .

The EU has become Mongolia’s third biggest trading partner, and Mongolian exporters benefit from the virtually tariff-free entry into the EU markets through the GSP+ (Generalised System of PreferencesAll available translations.) programme.

Under the EU-Mongolia Trade and Cooperation Agreement Joint Committee meetings in Ulaanbaatar and Brussels take place every year.
