Presidency of the 57th General Assembly

The Czech Republic presided over the UN 57th General Assembly session. The Presidential post was assumed by Mr Jan Kavan (former minister of foreign affairs of the Czech Republic) in September 2002. His priorities for the one year term included enhancement of peace and security, conflict prevention, combating international terrorism, promoting poverty eradication and sustainable development, strengthening the role of the United Nations and reform of the United Nations system.

The Czech Republic presided over the UN 57th General Assembly session. The Presidential post was assumed by Mr Jan Kavan (former minister of foreign affairs of the Czech Republic) in September 2002. His priorities for the one year term included enhancement of peace and security, conflict prevention, combating international terrorism, promoting poverty eradication and sustainable development, strengthening the role of the United Nations and reform of the United Nations system.

During the Czech Republic's Presidency, the General Assembly achieved a great progress in many areas, especially in the area of conflict prevention. After several months of futile negotiations, a Resolution on Prevention of Armed Conflicts (A/57/337) was facilitated by the Presidency and finally adopted. Mr Kavan also initiated a high-level meeting on the review of the implementation of the Millennium Declaration. During the Czech Republic´s Presidency, the General Assembly also dealt with other important areas of the UN reform, including the revitalization of the General Assembly and the reform of the Security Council.
