Statement by Mr. Petr Kaiser Deputy Permanent Representative of the Cyech Republic to the UN

Madam President,

let me join others in thanking you for convening this meeting as well as for your tireless efforts in organizing the debates during the 61st session of the GA on a very important subject: the reform of the Security Council.

The reform of the Security Council is no doubt a key part of the overall reform agenda as mandated at the highest political level possible at the last Summit. We also commend the facilitators for the job they have done.

Madam President,

We believe that under your stewardship we have achieved substantial progress. Consultations on all main elements regarding both the substance and the procedure have been undertaken.

Member states might have expressed different views on same issues but there is a broad agreement among them that the status quo is not an option. We believe that this momentum has to be maintained.

Therefore, we are convinced that after 14 years of extensive and detailed discussions - time has come to proceed to the logical next step: to start negotiations that would eventually lead to tangible results in the foreseeable future. Let us build on the work done so far. In this perspective we hope that it would be possible that the wish expressed by so many Member states to move on to real negotiation process will be reflected accordingly in the decision we are going to adopt.

Thank you
