Former President of the Czech Republic Mr. Václav Havel died on December 18, 2011

With deep sorrow, the Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic to the United Nations, regrets to inform of the death of former President of the Czech Republic His Excellency Mr. Václav Havel on December 18, 2011.

In the words of our Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Karel Schwarzenberg: "With Václav Havel passing away today we lose a man who brought dignity back to our nation, a person who had a crucial role in gaining freedom for our country in 1989. He was the most famous Czech, respected all around the world. Humble and shy as he was, he stood his ground at meetings and negotiations with the most powerful people of the world."
The Book of Condolences will be available in the Bohemian National Hall (321 E 73rd Street, btw. 1st and 2nd Avenues) from Wednesday, December 21, to Friday, December 23, 2011, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
