A Memory of Zwirko and Wigura

A memorial act in Warsaw honored the Polish military pilots Franciszek Zwirko and Stanislaw Wigura, who died tragically 80 years ago when crossing over the Czechoslovak border.

On September 11th, 2012 a delegation of the Polish Congress in the Czech Republic lead by Jozef Szymecek, together with war veterans and the Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Poland Jan Sechter gathered to honor the memory of the tragically deceased Polish military pilots, Franciszek Zwirko and Stanislaw Wigura. The memorial ceremony took place in Powazky, Warsaw and was followed by a memorial gathering at the Embbasy of the Czech Republic in Warsaw. The family of Franciszek Zwirko was also present.

Zwirko and Wigura died tragically in 1932 when their plane crashed after encountering a storm above the Czechoslovak border. The tragic accident came only two weeks after the two pilots had won the Challenge International de Tourisme in Berlin, Germany.
