Today, July 13, 2010, President Václav Klaus, acting on a proposal by Petr Nečas, the new 11th Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, named the individual members of the government. Petr Nečas replaces the previous prime minister, Jan Fischer, who led the government with his caretaker cabinet for more than a year.

In 2010, financial gifts for projects of Czech compatriot organizations will continue to be provided, in accordance with the government decree No. 1622/2005, as of December 14, 2005, as amended by the government decree No. 1542/2009. Czech compatriot organizations, societies of friends of the Czech Republic and similar organizations can apply for financial gifts intended for a) cultural projects, or b) maintenance and repairs of foreign Czech schools and other properties.

Application Deadlines for Czech Language Courses for Compatriots

The deadline for applications for traditional four-week Czech Language Course in Dobruska, Czech Republic and Czech Language Methodology Course for Teachers from Czech Compatriotic Communities is March 10, 2010. The deadline for applications for semester study abroad programs is March 31, 2010. The applications must be sent to the Embassy of the Czech Republic (attention to Ms. Jana Racova, Cultural Attaché, 3900 Spring of Freedom Street, NW, Washington, DC 20008).

Important Information: Compatriotic Educational Program and Teaching of Czech Language and Literature

In 2010, the implementation of the Compatriotic Educational Program Abroad will continue, in accordance with the government decree No. 1622/2005, as of December 14, 2005, as amended by the government decree as of October 8, 2008. The program includes semester study abroad programs, a 4-week Czech language course in Dobruska, Czech Republic, a 2-week Czech language methodology course for teachers from Czech compatriotic communities, and sending of Czech language teachers to Czech compatriotic communities abroad.

Resolution on the Occasion of Twenty Years of Freedom

On December 12, 2009, the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic adopted the following Resolution on the Occasion of Twenty Years of Freedom:

The 4th International Compatriotic Festival will be held in Prague from September 9–12, 2010. The festival will feature performers showcasing their folk dances and/or music abilities. The organizers have invited groups and individuals from all over the world to participate in the festival.

Czech aid to Haiti underway

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Jan Kohout decided on January 14, 2010 to provide urgent humanitarian financial aid to Haiti that was struck by an earthquake on January 12. Financial aid of 5 million CZK will be provided to the UNICEF funds in order to restore clean water systems. UNICEF maintains its permanent presence in Haiti and specializes in infrastructure modernization programs. The budget of the ministry for humanitarian aid is 73 million CZK for the year 2010. In 2009, the ministry provided 85 million CZK in humanitarian aid.
