Czech Comedy Classics: Golet in the Valley

(This article expired 21.10.2014 / 19:00.)

Date: 21 October 2014 7:00 PM, Venue: Bistro Bohem

On October 21, at 7 pm, Bistro Bohem will screen GOLET IN THE VALLEY (Golet v údolí) as part of the film and beer series featuring Czech comedy classics.

Golet in the Valley is a film based on a short story book by Ivan Olbracht written in 1937. The storyline brings us to a Jewish village Polana in Ruthenia. Throughout the movie, we follow the lives of the large families of three friends – Bainysh, Moishe, and Pinkhes. The authors’ intent to provide a nostalgic view of Jewish community is illustrated by Jewish songs that appear throughout the film.

About the Director:

The director Zeno Dostál was born in 1934. Dostál’s parents were sent to a concentration camp in 1944 and Zeno himself had to hide. His suffering continued under the communist regime that followed the Second World War and he was expelled from a university in Prague for political reasons. Dostál started working in the film studio Barrandov in 1960 as an unskilled laborer but eventually became an assistant director. At the beginning of the 1990s, Zeno Dostál directed a film that was based on his own novel – the King of the Colonnades (Král kolonád). Dostál died in 1996 as the chairman of the Jewish Community of Prague.
